Solutions

We envisage a world where all intact forests are valued and conserved through effective, equitable, lasting, on-the-ground action. To make this a reality needs action at all scales from international and domestic policy through to individual landscapes and sites, supported by the best scientific evidence.

Science

Our own science teams work with a huge diversity of other experts to measure and monitor the integrity of the world's forests, to quantify their value and to assess which conservation solutions are working.

International policy and finance

Intact Forests should be prioritized in the formulation of all international environmental policies. We are focused on those where we think we can achieve the greatest impacts.

Climate policy

Intact forests have huge climate value which should be recognized in the implementation of the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In particular we need to see intact forests properly valued by climate finance mechanisms and initiatives and reflected in ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions.  Read about our work on innovative climate finance.

Biodiversity conservation policy

We aim to have ecosystem integrity adopted, alongside ecosystem extent, as a measure of success in key global biodiversity policy frameworks. In parallel we work on mobilizing more biodiversity finance, enhancing conservation models, and promoting improved land management decisions.

Convention on Biological Diversity: We are calling for maintaining and enhancing ecosystem integrity to be one of the headline goals of the forthcoming Global Biodiversity Framework, backed by strong action targets. Learn more.

IUCN: We are supporting the development and rollout of the IUCN global Policy on primary forests, including intact forest landscapes.

We championed Motion 041 on ecosystem integrity, which was adopted at the World Conservation Congress in September 2021.

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs): We are supporting the development of methods to define sites that qualify as Key Biodiversity Areas based on their exceptional ecological integrity, and so merit increased investment and protection.

New York Declaration on Forests

We pushed for the refreshed 2021 goals of this critical global agreement to go beyond targeting just deforestation. They now set goals for halting forest degradation too, and the action agenda highlights intact forest conservation. Learn more.

Action in the field

We work with local stakeholders to promote more effective on-the-ground management in most of the major intact forest regions of the world. Our partners include governments, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, civil society and the private sector.

One of the most promising models we invest in is the setting up of landscape-level mosaics of protected and conserved areas in key intact forest blocks, supported by national policies and agreed spatial plans. These mosaics typically include a mixture of community-owned and state-owned lands.

Collectively, the FFL partners work on the ground in more than 60 countries, across tropical, temperate and boreal zones.
